Types of numbers
I thought it would be interesting to see what some of the different types of numbers are in Japanese.
実数 – ã˜ã£ã™ã† – real number
有ç†æ•° – ゆã†ã‚Šã™ã† – rational number
ç„¡ç†æ•° – むりã™ã† – irrational number
虚数 – ãょã™ã† – imaginary number
è¤‡ç´ æ•° – ãµããã™ã† – complex number
åˆ†è§£åž‹è¤‡ç´ æ•° – ã¶ã‚“ã‹ã„ãŒãŸãµããã™ã† – split-complex number
二元数 – ã«ã’ã‚“ã™ã† – dual number
二元数 can also refer, in a broad sense, to complex and split complex numbers as well.
四元数 – ã—ã’ã‚“ã™ã† – quaternian
八元数 – ã¯ã¡ã’ã‚“ã™ã† – octonian
I think the japanese words for the higher dimensional numbers are particularly interesting. Somehow the more direct representations seem like they would be easier to understand than the latin prefixes.
